Canada Launches Personalized Processing Times for Work Permit Extensions and PGWPs
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has introduced a personalized processing-time feature on its official portal, allowing work permit extension and Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) applicants to receive wait-time estimates linked to their specific submission date.
How the Date-Based Estimates Work
Previously, IRCC’s processing-time tool displayed broader, generalized timelines calculated from the day a user accessed the website. The updated feature allows applicants to input the exact date their application was submitted, providing a tailored timeline reflecting processing queue progression from that specific filing date.
Individuals who have not yet submitted their application can also utilize the tool to view an estimated timeline based on submitting on the date of inquiry.
Scope of Application
The new personalized processing-time feature applies to select in-Canada applicants:
-
Work Permit Extensions: Temporary workers applying to extend, renew, or change conditions on an existing work permit.
-
Initial PGWPs: International student graduates applying inside Canada for their first Post-Graduation Work Permit.
The general “Work permit in Canada” lookup option remains on IRCC’s website for non-PGWP applicants submitting an initial work permit application from within Canada.
Work Authorization via Maintained Status
IRCC highlights that applicants who submit an extension or PGWP application prior to the expiry of their existing status benefit from Maintained Status (formerly referred to as implied status). Provided the candidate remains in Canada, this legal provision allows them to continue working under the terms of their previous authorization while waiting for IRCC to issue a final decision.
