Visitor Visa vs. Visitor Record: Clearing Up the Confusion
One of the most frequent mistakes temporary residents make in Canada is assuming that a Visitor Visa and a Visitor Record are the same thing. Understanding the difference is crucial to maintaining your legal status in 2026.
The Visitor Visa (TRV): Your Entry Key
The Visitor Visa is a sticker placed in your passport by a visa office outside Canada. Its purpose is to allow you to travel to and request entry at a Canadian border. It does not guarantee how long you can stay; that is decided by the officer at the port of entry.
The Visitor Record: Your Stay Extension
The Visitor Record is an independent paper document issued inside Canada by IRCC. It is used to:
- Extend your stay as a visitor beyond the initial 6 months.
- Change your status from a worker or student to a visitor.
The Golden Rule
A Visitor Record does not allow you to re-enter Canada if you leave. To return, you will still need a valid Visitor Visa or an eTA.
